2016 Major Legislative Accomplishments

Protecting our Children

  • Improves the background check system to stop abusers from working in daycare settings (SB278)

  • Creates another tool to use child victim statements in court (SB421)

Combating the Heroin and Opioid Epidemic

  • Requires that pharmacies update the Prescription Monitoring Program within 24 hours of filling a prescription. Previously, they had seven days to do so. (SB287)

    • This bill was a recommendation of the Governor’s Task Force on Heroin and Opioid Abuse, and seeks to increase information available to doctors and pharmacies and combat “pill mills” throughout the Commonwealth.

  • Gives treatment providers access to more medication-assisted therapies to treat addiction (SB556)

Mental Health Services for Volunteer First Responders

  • Allows any locality to fund participation in mental health treatment and counseling programs for members of volunteer fire or rescue companies (SB79)


  • Gives Loudoun County a greater voice in regional transit decisionmaking (SB277)

Family Law Changes    

  • Clarifies source of spousal support payments during a couple’s separation prior to finalization of divorce (SB70)
